Stephan was born in the Bahamas and moved to Abaco at the age of two. Despite being originally from Nassau, his connection to the island runs deep; he has vivid memories of playing basketball in his neighborhood, fishing out of his small boat, and the bumpy travel down unpaved roads. Stephan’s father played a significant role in paving the way–literally–for progress in the region when he worked on paving the major roadway on the island.

Raised in a tight-knit family, Stephan describes his childhood surrounded by the love of his parents and a house filled with rescued animals. Growing up with a strong bond, Stephan’s family weathered through hurricanes–rebuilding their home after the devastating impacts of natural disasters like Hurricane Dorian.

Sports and fishing became integral to Stephan’s upbringing, providing solace during tough times and fostering a sense of community. He reflects on playing basketball with kids, older individuals, and even tourists. Stephan’s resilience and kindness shine through as he shares the lessons he learned from these team sports experiences.

“I learned to be kind of tough because I wouldn’t always get picked. And when I did, I would have to play well. I just got a lot tougher. But I also learned kindness because a lot of them would like to encourage me or let the younger kids play with them. So that was pretty cool.”

Leaving the Bahamas for college in Florida marked a significant turning point for Stephan. The decision was driven by a desire for a broader education and new experiences. Despite facing personal challenges, such as his father’s illness during his senior year, Stephan completed his degree and returned home to contribute to Agape Christian School, eventually becoming the vice principal.

Stephan acknowledges the crucial role played by the community and his Christian upbringing in shaping his character. He emphasizes the sense of family and support that Christian schools provide, contributing to his commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of young students.

As Stephan looks to the future, he remains grounded, taking life one day at a time. He expresses his passion for working with kids and sports, aiming to provide opportunities for students that he didn’t have. Stephan’s vision extends to helping the community and positively impacting the lives of those around him.
