by | May 13, 2024

Meet Mario Louis: A 26-year-old school counselor, sports enthusiast, and mentor making a significant impact in the lives of young individuals in the vibrant community of Abaco, Bahamas. Mario shares his inspiring journey from growing up in New Providence to pursuing a career in counseling, fueled by a deep passion for helping others.

Mario’s childhood was marked by curiosity and a love for sports. Growing up in a loving nuclear family, he engaged in various activities–hanging out with friends, playing soccer, and learning new gymnastic tricks. Mario’s active and observant nature contributed to his deep understanding of human behavior and the ability to offer valuable advice, a trait that would become pivotal in his future career.

Raised in a neighborhood marred by violence and drugs, Mario’s home served as a sanctuary. Despite the challenges, he cherished a supportive environment where friends gathered to play video games and share meals. Born to Haitian parents in the Bahamas, Mario navigated the complexities of identity and citizenship, eventually earning his Bahamian citizenship at 20 years old.

Mario’s journey through the Bahamian education system is marked by discrimination from teachers and fellow students, yet he emerged resilient. Hindered by citizenship restrictions, he embarked on a path of self-sufficiency, working various jobs after high school. Through determination and a soccer scholarship, he eventually pursued a Bachelor’s degree and is now working towards a Master’s in Clinical Psychology.

Growing up in a Christian household, he values humility but also acknowledges the need to assert oneself when necessary. Mario attributes his strong sense of empathy to his experiences and cites his godfather as a role model for wisdom and biblical literacy.

From Bible study groups to practical life skills, he strives to equip youth with valuable knowledge and guidance. His dedication to community welfare is evident through his multifaceted roles as a school counselor, leader within the Bahamas Youth Network (BYN) and G2, as well as the founder of the soccer club “Kickers.”

Mario emphasizes his Christian faith as a core aspect of his identity, guiding his actions and decisions. Looking ahead, he plans to complete his Master’s in Clinical Psychology and continue making a positive impact in Abaco. Despite the challenges of his past, Mario remains rooted in his Bahamian identity, expressing a deep love for the environment that feels like home.

Mario Louis’s journey reflects resilience, determination, and a genuine commitment to making a difference. As he continues to shape the lives of young individuals and contribute to his community, his story serves as an inspiration for those facing adversity.
