Meet Layla Perotti, a 16-year-old born in West Palm Beach but a proud resident of Abaco her entire life. Currently working as a waitress in a local restaurant and bar, Layla offers us a glimpse into her world, sharing her experiences, challenges, and dreams.
Layla’s workweek varies, influenced by the ebb and flow of tourist seasons. Since the reopening post-Hurricane Dorian, she’s been consistently working at Snappas Bar and Grille for about a year and a half. While homeschooled, Layla recently completed 11th grade and plans to finish her last year. Her American-Bahamian roots tie her education to an American system, keeping her schedule simple with three days a week for three to four hours per day.

Growing up, Layla faced familial challenges, finding solace at her grandma Joy’s house due to the turmoil at home. Though her childhood wasn’t ideal, Layla believes it shaped her values and parenting aspirations. Despite her parents’ ongoing conflicts, Layla’s close-knit relationship with her sisters and grandma became a source of strength and support. Joy, Layla’s grandmother, remains a significant influence and role model in her life, a beacon of positivity.
Layla enjoys travel and hopes to do more in the coming years. This year she plans on a trip to Japan with her sisters and then eventually to New York and Seattle on other trips. Staying active in Abaco, Layla enjoys playing volleyball and expressed her love for the Abaco beaches.

Motivated by the need to provide for herself, Layla showcases her independence by managing her expenses and setting daily goals. Currently unable to open a bank account due to her age, Layla navigates life with determination and a strong work ethic.
In the next year and a half to two years, Layla plans to complete her education, move away for a bit to study cosmetology and pursue her dream of becoming a nail technician. She envisions returning to Abaco, emphasizing the friendly atmosphere of the family islands. Layla also hopes to continue to deepen her relationship with God as the years go on.
Layla Perotti’s story is one of resilience, independence, and dreams anchored in the beautiful surroundings of Abaco. As she navigates her path, Layla is a testament to the strength that comes from family, personal determination, and the unwavering spirit of the Bahamian people.
